이별에는 두 가지 조건이 필요하다. 먼저 타자와 만나야 한다. 그리고 나의 시간과 타자의 시간이 다르게 흘러감을 깨달아야 한다. 이는 곧 타자의 시간이 이별의 토대를 만들고, 타자의 시간이 나의 다음 시간을 결정한다는 사실을 알아차리는 것이다. 레비나스는 『시간과 타자』에서 타자 가운데 가장 철저한 타자는 죽음이라고 밝힌다. 죽음은 우리가 예측할 수 없으며 동시에 내가 파악하거나 소유할 수 없는 끝없는 타자이기 때문이다. 이 막막한 타자 앞에서 나는 스스로 통제할 수 있는 근대적 시간을 갖지 못한 채 타자가 머무르는 시간 쪽으로 반쯤 열려있을 수 밖에 없다. 따라서 나의 미래는 곧 타자(죽음)와의 관계이다. 그렇기에 이별의 능력이란 타자의 시간을 받아들이는 것, 나의 시간이 타자의 시간으로 연결되는 그 어떤 시점을 하염없이 기다리는 능력인 것이다. 우리 몸을 구성하고 있는 물은 다른 몸들의 일부이기도 하고 오래전 강과 호수였듯, 먼 훗날에는 바다와 연못을 이루고 있을지도 모른다. 물의 긴 시간 속에서 찰나에 불과한 이 몸은 다시 그곳으로 돌아가 비가 되어 내리고 또 다른 존재들에게 스며들어 있을 것이다. 이러한 물의 관점에서 보면 모든 것은 순환하고 연결되어 있다. 그러나 오랜 시간 상상의 땅을 기반으로 사유해온 사람들은 선형적 시간과 역사, 임의적 경계와 국경 같은 개념을 구축해왔다. 그들이 서로 빼앗고 장벽을 세우는 동안 지도 위에는 무수히 많은 선들이 그려졌다. 전시 《우리는 섬처럼 떨어져 있을지라도》는 그려진 선들을 가로지르고, 서술된 역사를 넘어 깊고 알 수 없는 조상의 시간을 기억하며 현재, 그리고 미래와 연결시키기 위해 물과 함께 사유하기를 제안한다.
전시 제목인 “우리는 섬처럼 떨어져 있을지라도”는 극단 ‘코끼리들이 웃는다’의 공연 <물질>에 대한 작가 노트에서 발췌되었으며, 본래의 문장은 “같은 바다에 몸을 담그고 있다”로 끝난다. 우리가 물처럼 생각하고 존재한다면 모든 것은 고립된 개체가 아니라 끊임 없는 순환의 매개체이다.
The water that constitutes our bodies, just as it was once part of other bodies, rivers, and lakes long ago, may one day form seas and ponds in the distant future. In the vast timeline of water, this fleeting body will return there, falling as rain andseeping into other beings. Through the lens of water, everything circulates and interconnects. However, people who have over time based their thinking on imaginary lands have constructed concepts such as linear time, history, arbitrary boundaries, and national borders. While they took from each other and built barriers, countless lines were drawn acrossmaps. The exhibition We May Be Separated Like Islands, Butproposes thinking with water to cross these drawn lines, remember the deep and unknowable ancestral time beyond narrated history, and connect it to the present and future.
The exhibition title, We May Be Separated Like Islands, But, is excerpted from the artist’s note on the performance Muljil by the theatre company “Elephants Laugh,” with the original sentence ending “we are immersed in the same sea.” If we think and flow like water, everything is not an isolated entity but a medium of constant circulation.

He remains a controversial personality in Italy due to his blunt style and the focus of some of his works on taboo sexual matters. He was an established major figure in European literature and cinematic arts. His murder prompted an outcry in Italy and its circumstances continue to be a matter of heated debate.
